>> HOW TO ADD AN HMI ALARM LOG IN TIA PORTAL (4 Step Tutorial)Hi!Are you incorporating HMI alarms in your TIA Portal applications? 👉 Well, sure you areAre you logging those alarms as historical data for troubleshooting and fault backtracking? 👉 You definitely should!I've been struggling a bit with the standard "Alarm buffer" option in TIA Portal on panels with V17 firmware (my buffer is deleted once in a while - was working perfect on V15.1 firmware). So I decided to use a different approach to log my HMI alarms using the alarm log option. Here’s an easy 4-step guide to log HMI alarms on an SD card in TIA Portal.1️⃣ Create an Alarm Log under Historical DataGo to the "Historical Data" in the tree structure on the left of your HMI application, and under the "Alarm logs" tab, create a new data log.I typically set the number of data records to maximum - 500000 for the panels I use.The storage type is not so important, but I'm used to CSV, and for the path, select the \Storage Card SD\.Finally, setup the logging method as "Circular log" and enable logging at runtime start.2️⃣ Set up logging for your alarm classes (errors, warnings, system, diagnostics etc...)Go to the "HMI alarms" of your HMI application, and under the "Alarm classes" tab, add the alarm log which you created in the first step to the alarm classes that you'd like to log.I typically log Errors, Warnings, System and Diagnostics events.3️⃣ Create an alarm view object and configure as Alarm logCreate an alarm view object on your HMI screen, and under "General" properties, select "Alarm log" and add the alarm log created in step 1.You do not have to worry about enabling the alarm classes on this property screen. You have already set up logging for the alarm classes in the previous step.4️⃣ Add an SD card to your HMI panel slotFinally, remember to insert an SD card to the SD card slot on the back of your HMI panel. You do not need a Siemens SD card for this, a standard off-the-shelf SD card will do.And that is how easy it is to set up alarm logging for your HMI alarms in a TIA Portal application.I hope this helps a fellow TIA programmer out there! 🙌 -HansPS. Thanks. this is great info. Can you add the same tutorial for the new unified panels?

    >> Optimize Your Danfoss VLT CommunicationHi!During my commissioning of a large TIA migration project, I was running into some issues with Danfoss VLT frequency converters. More specific, some of these VFDs would lose Profinet connection, but only for a split second 🤨. This was enough to generate an alarm on the HMI.What I figured out is that the issue was related to the communication update time. It was default set to “calculate update time automatically” - which resulted in a calculated update time of 4ms. The issue got resolved by setting the update time manually to 32ms.It seems Danfoss VFDs prefer to talk slower 😃⚠️ Do you have any practical experience with Danfoss VFDs you’d like to share?👉 Let me know in the comments below!-HansPS. >> What I've learned from 2 weeks of commissioning PLC softwareHi there! I'm writing from my hotel room in this beautiful northern Italian town where I'm spending four weeks commissioning a migration of a production line from Classic Step 7 and Simotion to TIA Portal. This massive project involves around 30 servo drives, a complete software-based safety system, 10 HMI panels, 7 Simatic T-CPUs, an RFID system with about a dozen stations, SQL data collection, and numerous third party equipment and external communication interfaces. It's a monster of an assignment which took me about nine months to prepare for 😅.So far, everything is going great 🙌 and I'm done with the first two weeks of commissioning. Here are five things I've learned on this trip so far:👉 Some things take longer than expectedI managed to commission 10 servo axes in 2-3 hours, but then spent the next 5 hours on a single axis. Always plan for the unexpected and add some buffer time for when things don't go as planned.👉 Some things go faster than expectedYesterday, I set aside 4 hours to get an RFID system up and running, but it only took me half an hour. Cherish those sweet wins and use the extra time to get ahead of your schedule.👉 Planning is crucialDuring my first week of commissioning, I started working without a schedule, just trying to get things done. After getting stuck on some low-priority issues, I decided to note them down and create a schedule for the next three weeks. Having a daily plan ensures you know which goals to achieve within each time period. Don’t get stuck on small issues for too long - keep moving forward.👉 Prepare and simulateDuring my software preparation at home, I spent several days testing parts of the software using the S7-PLCSIM. Even with the standard simulator, I was able to identify and fix many mistakes in my PLC and HMI software, and even simulating servo axes movement!👉 Remember to take time offWhen you're away from home, it's tempting to fall into a routine of work, return to the hotel, relax with a beer, and go to bed. However, I try a different approach by prioritizing healthy eating and integrating exercise into my daily routine. Upon arrival, I got myself a membership for a month at the local gym, and have been doing hikes and runs as well. I believe a healthy body and spirit enhances the performance of my PLC brain 😀 So I got 2 weeks left - let's see what's more to learn here!-HansPS. My YouTube channel just hit 7k subscribers! >> Copying Blocks Between Different TIA Portal VersionsIf you - or the company you're working at - are using different versions of TIA Portal for developing PLC and HMI applications, you might have noticed that copying blocks (OBs, FCs, FBs, UDTs, etc.) between projects of different TIA versions is not possible. 😒 For example, you cannot directly copy an FB from a TIA V17 project to a TIA V18 project.😀 However, there is a solution for this inconvenience!👉 You first need to UPGRADE your lower version project to the higher TIA Portal version. In the example mentioned above, you would first start by upgrading the TIA V17 project to a TIA V18 project (this can be easily done by opening the V17 project in TIA V18, which will automatically prompt you to upgrade).Once the project has been upgraded, you can easily copy the blocks from one project to the other. Another win for the PLC programmer. 🙌 I hope this information helps fellow TIA programmers out there!-HansPS. >> Eager to learn more about the TIA Portal Project Library...?Then I got exciting news for you!Last week, I conducted a poll here on LinkedIn,and 63% of your expressed interest in learning more about the TIA Portal Project Library. I'm happy to share that I'm hard at work on my next TIA Portal course, which will feature the use of the TIA Library. In my upcoming course on advanced structures in TIA Portal, you will learn:➡ How to identify commonly used HMI objects and standardize their various usages and configuration options➡ How to define data structure requirements for communication between HMI object and PLC block➡ How to create a configurable, standardized block of logic for controlling the faceplate object➡ How to use the TIA Portal Project Library for grouping and versioning of your new building blocks➡ How to incorporate your new building blocks in the modular structure of your TIA projectThis course isn't just about how to create faceplates❗ It's a proven 3-step system designed to help you identify reusable building blocks in your PLC and HMI applications and create standardized blocks for them. With this approach, you will create uniform TIA projects that are faster to build, easier to configure, and simpler to troubleshoot.💪 👉 If you'd like the latest updates on my upcoming course and want to join a free 3-day workshop before the launch, sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dSXBX2xX...- HansP.S. I'm still thinking of a suitable title for my course. I might do another poll soon, and I'd love your input! 😀#tiaportal #plctraining #plcprogramming #systemintegrators #controlengineering #automationengineering #plcskilltree
